The fatigue is often so severe that patients cannot do daily tasks such as getting dressed or cooking a meal. The symptoms are chronic and can last for years or even decades. The illness usually affects middle-aged people, and women are affected more often than men. Up to <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><u><a class=\"western\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/me-cfs\/about\/index.html\">3 million people in the U.S. alone<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span> are considered affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">No one knows what causes chronic fatigue syndrome, so there is no effective treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">However, looking at the symptoms, there are strong similarities with the neurotoxic effects caused by heavy metals (see the tab Depression \u2013 Heavy Metals above).
